Why I left Stake

Is Stake VIP worth it?
What $1.55 million taught me.

I spent more than two years on Stake and climbed to Platinum III, and for most of that time the VIP club felt like the best thing about it. By the end I was playing through the week just to see what the next weekly would be, without ever really knowing what any of it was worth, and I stopped wanting to chase it.

How it wore off

The VIP club was the reason I stayed

When I joined Stake in April 2024, it felt like the complete crypto casino. It was polished, the cash-outs were quick enough that I trusted them, and the VIP club gave every session a second purpose, because every bet nudged me further up the ladder and a little closer to the next reward.

The rewards were real, too. A weekly landed on Saturday, a monthly followed, and I’d get the odd bonus for climbing another rung of the ladder. I kept climbing until I hit Platinum III with $1.55 million wagered, which sounds like a fortune until you remember that turnover counts the same money every time it goes round, not what I actually put in.

Then the rewards stopped feeling like rewards

It didn’t happen all at once. The rank bar slowed to a crawl the higher I got, the weeklies and monthlies stopped landing with the weight they used to, and the games I’d been happy with started to feel expensive. I wasn’t really playing for the fun of it any more. I was playing through the week to see what Saturday would bring, and when it disappointed, the only answer the system offered was to play some more.

By Platinum III, it felt less like looking after me and more like looking after Eddie’s back pocket.

I never knew what I was really getting back

That was what got to me most in the end. Stake never tells you how a weekly or a monthly is worked out, so you play all week, wait, and take whatever lands. I claimed every reward it gave me and I still couldn’t tell you what any of it was worth against what I’d put through the site, and the longer that went on, the less I trusted it.

That is the background to my look at Duel’s bonus and rakeback approach. I also compare the games, sportsbook and cash-outs in the full Duel versus Stake review.

Meanwhile the cut on Stake’s Originals was probably costing me thousands on top of the money I’d already lost. New slots kept turning up with RTPs down in the low 95s, and the whole place started to feel built around max-win clips for Twitter rather than the people actually playing. That was when I was done, and I started looking for somewhere else.

What a one-percent edge means at that volume

For scale, 1% of my $1,548,142.84 recorded turnover is $15,481.43. That would be the theoretical cost if every dollar had been wagered at a 1% house edge. My account includes different games and rewards, so it is not a statement of my actual loss.

The calculation and its limits

$1,548,142.84 × 0.01 = $15,481.4284. If a hypothetical reward returned 10% of that edge, it would give back $1,548.14, leaving $13,933.29 of expected cost. At 50% of the edge returned, the expected cost would halve to $7,740.71. Those are illustrations, not verified Stake reward rates or a reconstruction of my balance.

A VIP progress bar measures qualifying activity; it does not measure profit. A reward worth less than the expected cost of extra wagering is not a reason to make those extra bets.

What I wanted instead

I didn’t want a better VIP club somewhere else. I wanted a casino that didn’t need one, where the value sat in the bet itself instead of in a reward I had to wait for, and that’s what pulled me to Duel. Its own games pay out at 100% RTP, so there’s no cut to hand back later dressed up as a bonus, and on eligible third-party games it returns half the house edge as instant rakeback, claimable in the game screen. My saved tooltip shows a 96.51% base RTP becoming roughly 98.26% after that return.

The sportsbook makes the same point. When I tracked 26 Premier League and Champions League fixtures, Duel had the best or joint-best price on 73 of 78 outcomes and beat Stake on 67 of them, which worked out to an average payout 4.33% higher on the same stake. On top of that, the leaderboards pay $25,000 every day and $3 million every month on slots and live games, and you can see what every place pays before you place a bet.

Getting my money out has been just as straightforward. Across two sessions and eight withdrawals I haven’t once been asked for ID, and my first cash-out was recorded on Ethereum within 1 minute 11 seconds of the request. There’s no rank bar to chase and no Saturday to wait for, and after two years of doing exactly that, I hadn’t realised how much I’d stopped enjoying it until it was gone.

So, is Stake VIP worth it?

Not for me, and not in the way it sells itself. Looking back, the VIP club was never really a reward for loyalty. It was a system for keeping me wagering: a rank bar that always had another level above it, weeklies and monthlies I could never put a number on, and a cut on every bet that paid for all of it long before a single bonus landed.

What makes it feel crooked is that it never shows you the number that matters. You get the progress bar, the drop and the little celebration, but never how much of what came back was your own money returned to you as a gift. The rewards are real, but they come out of losses you’ve already paid, and they’re timed so the next one always feels close enough to keep going.

Once I saw that, I couldn’t go back to playing for the next drop. If you’re thinking about chasing Stake VIP, go in knowing what the ladder is actually for. I’d rather play somewhere that doesn’t take the cut in the first place, and that’s why I left.
